What to do if a Dog kills a cat? Why or How?

My sister just had her cat torn to pieces by these two dogs from her neighbors house... The neighbor doesn't seem to care.. She just said that she's sorry and there isn't much she could do or something like that I don't really remember what my sister told me.

But her Fiance is a Marine and he hates Dogs as it is and I know I can't convince him or anything to not do anything, but he already has his mind set on getting the dogs to avenge the cat's death I guess...

So... I don't really know what to do if a Dog kills a cat or how it could be justified, I mean I know they're animals and it's natural... (sometimes) but I have seen Dogs behave with Cats just fine, why do Dogs do that? And how do you justify it?What to do if a Dog kills a cat? Why or How?
Exactly what happened? Were the dogs on your property? If so, she can take this to court. Was her cat on their property? If so, then she doesn't have a leg to stand on.What to do if a Dog kills a cat? Why or How?
I honestly do hope that she takes the owners to court. Hate to say it, but it -killed- a cat. I'd be furious. What to do if a Dog kills a cat? Why or How?
Call the police now! next time it could be a child. If the owner does not keep control of her dogs then she should not have then. the police most likely take them away and put them to sleep. Just so you know I am an absolute dog lover and I currently own a pitbull mix. He is very loving and probably wouldn't hurt anything, But he is a prey type dog which means that his instinct is to kill small animals. I own a cat and they are best friends, but I never let him out of my sight when I take him outside around small dogs or other critters. What to do if a Dog kills a cat? Why or How?
If the dogs came onto her property and killed her cat, get the police involved.

Don't let her finace take it into his hands, it will just make a messy situation messier.

Dogs have prey drive, to hunt and kill things smaller than them.

Some have more than others, like terriers or hounds.

It's natural and normal...but it doesn't make killing your sister's cat okay. What to do if a Dog kills a cat? Why or How?
Contact animal control right away. They will definitely do something about the dogs (take them away and/or put them them to sleep is they are determined to be dangerous) and ask them what legal action can be taken. Do not let your brother in law seek revenge on the dogs; that's just childish and he'll get into a lot of trouble. What to do if a Dog kills a cat? Why or How?
As unfortunate as it is, aggression toward other animals is NORMAL. Please talk to this guy about the dogs, there is no excuse for %26quot;punishing%26quot; them, especially since they'll have no notion what they are being punished for. To punish them after the fact is cruel, inhumane, wrong, and WILL NOT ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING. Dogs are simple creatures. Their short-term memory is literally only seconds long. Their long term memory only commits trauma, very exciting things, or repetitive actions (like training).

They will not remember killing the cat, they will not understand when he tells them whatever happens is for killing the cat, and they are mentally and physically incapable of connecting punishment to crime unless you catch them in the act. This is scientific fact, they are that simple. To punish them now would be obscenely cruel.

Dogs chase cats because dogs have a prey drive. They should have trained the dogs. It is the neighbor's fault it happened, because they failed to train the dogs on how to behave with small animals, particularly cats.

If you think he may harm the dogs, please call animal control immediately. Aggression toward other animals, even killing other animals, does NOT correlate in ANY way to aggression toward humans. My own rescue husky once took part in a mass kitty slaughter but didn't have an aggressive bone in his body. It was all prey drive and lack of training. When I got him, I fixed that problem with relative ease. If you have any reason to suspect these dogs may come to harm, be beaten, killed, or anything, please call animal control immediately.

I'm sorry for your sister's cat, and the dog's owners should take more responsibility . Not training the dogs and then acting like there was no real problem is irresponsible on so many levels. This doesn't mean they are at all dangerous to people, though.

Behaving with cats is a learned, trained behavior. All dogs have a prey drive, and cats very often trigger that instinct to chase and kill. If one wants a dog that does not do this, they have to TRAIN the dog not to, they have to condition the dog to practice impulse control and be gentle. Dogs are carnivores and they are predators. To expect them to just get along with prey animals without training and socializing is a mistake.

You don't justify it. It happened because the owners failed to properly train and handle their dogs, end of story. These dogs belong with somebody who will handle them responsibly. What to do if a Dog kills a cat? Why or How?
Call your non emergency police number, they will tell you what needs to be done, then call the local animal authorities. They may want the remains of the cat and the jungle gym thingy as evidence. Cats can be outside anywhere generally... there usually isn't laws about that, however, there are laws about dogs being confined, leashed and the owner being in control of them. This is very unfortunate, and I'm sorry your sister lost her kitty. It's much better if she could keep the cat indoors for in the future or any other cat she might have.
